Michael Praetorius, and the Musical Glories of the German Protestant 17th Century

Michael Praetorius

On Monday, April 30th in Anabel Taylor Chapel, Anna Steppler and friends will present a program for choir and organ by the German composer, organist and theorist Michael Praetorius (1571-1621), Kapellmeister at the court of the famed music-lover Heinrich Julius, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, and then at the Electoral Court in Dresden. These were two of the most opulent musical establishments in Germany, with – thanks to Praetorius – the most highly developed organ cultures before the outbreak of the catastrophic Thirty Years’ War (which began 500 years ago this May).

Come and join us, to hear German-Protestant music in its pre-war glory, and enjoy the last opportunity this semester to hear the Cornell Baroque organ in all its colorful monumentality.

Monday, April 30th, 8pm.

Free and open to the public.
